American Centrifuge is USEC’s next-generation uranium enrichment technology. It is based on U.S. centrifuge technology, a proven, energy-efficient technology originally developed by the U.S. Department of Energy.
USEC is deploying this technology in the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio. Demonstration and manufacturing activities are also underway at several facilities located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and in a number of other states across the United States.
The American Centrifuge Plant will provide the United States with a domestic source of fuel for the country’s 104 nuclear reactors, the source of approximately 20 percent of America’s electricity and continue a long history of supplying international markets.
Will provide a long-term, reliable and secure fuel supply for nuclear power plants in America and around the world
Will create approximately 8,000 jobs across America and will help rebuild the U.S. nuclear manufacturing base
Will reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 10 million tons annually
Will keep America from becoming dependent on foreign sources for our nuclear fuel
Is integral to America’s energy and national security
